Biography

Phoebe Alexander’s career has encompassed broadcast journalism, Film & TV work, teaching, and educational travel consultant with extensive involvement in charity and community work.Phoebe migrated to Australia in 1973 from Taiwan. Her fluency in Mandarin brought her many opportunities in interpreting, voice-overs, acting and teaching.Phoebe joined SBS Radio as a senior producer on its Mandarin programs, she conducted interviews with political, business and civic leaders, including some world figures, such as the Dalai Lama. She both produced and presented SBS Radio programs for 16 years, including live broadcasts from across Australia and overseas for SBS Youth Orchestra’s Beijing tour. Phoebe also undertook television work, including producing a Qantas travel film “Welcome to Taiwan”, and other documentaries.In recent years, Phoebe has developed a passion for educational travel, specialising in North and South-East Asia, by designing specialty tours for universities and other educational institutions. She was appointed manager Asia in Odyssey Travel, and expanded that company’s appeal to school and other study tour groups.Phoebe is a fluent public speaker and an assiduous and active contributor to a number of community groups in the Sydney region. Phoebe was first elected to the ACCF board in 1993. She has since become a trustee. Currently, Phoebe is also on the board of Australian Institute of International Affairs (AIIA) and a member of the advisory board of the Chinese Language Education Council of NSW. Over the years, Phoebe has been the president of Australia Taiwan Women’s Association, Vice chairwoman of Australia Taiwan Friendship Associations, Taiwan Australia Chamber of Commerce and Federation of Community Language Schools as well as a board member of Ethnic Community Council and Ethnic Languages School Board. She also served 9 years as councillor of Art Gallery Society of NSW.
